Grievance and Complaint Procedure

INFORMAL RESOLUTION OF DISPUTES:

Apprentices are encouraged to informally discuss issues or problems that may arise, whether in the Mechanical Trades Institute- Joint Apprenticeship and Training Trust (MTI-JATT) or on the job, with the administration, their lead instructors, or their nighttime instructors, to obtain assistance or resolution. The purposes and objectives of the Mechanical Trades Institute Joint Apprenticeship and Training Trust can be most effectively achieved through the process of cooperative problem solving.

PROCEDURE:

All apprentices have the right to present grievances regarding terms and conditions of their apprentice training, discipline, wages determinations, attendance determinations, assessments or evaluations, and any other matter or concern related to their enrollment and participation in the Mechanical Trades Institute Joint Apprenticeship and Training Trust, using the following procedure:

Step 1: The apprentice shall present a written grievance stating the specific facts and issues that are the subject of the grievance by presenting the written grievance to the administration. The apprentices should complete the student grievance form found on the school's website, under Quick links, www.mti-jatt.org. The Training Director will investigate and propose an action or resolution. If the apprentices' grievance is not satisfied with the Training Director's proposed action or resolution, the apprentice may request the grievance or complain be addressed by the Board of Trustees.

Step 2: The administration shall notify the apprentice of a date and time to appear before the Board for a hearing regarding the grievance. The apprentice must present any documents or witnesses that are relevant to the grievance at the Board hearing. The Board will issue a written decision regarding the grievance within 15 days after the hearing.

Step 3: If the apprentice is dissatisfied with the decision of the Board regarding the grievance, the apprentice can, within 10 days after receiving the decision, appeal the decision in writing to the Board, by presenting the written appeal to the administration. The appeal shall fully state the basis for the appeal. The administration acting on behalf of the Board shall notify the apprentice of a date and time to appear before the Board for a hearing regarding the appeal/grievance. The apprentice must present any additional documents or witnesses that are relevant to the appeal at the Board hearing.

The Board will issue a written decision regarding the appeal within 15 days after the hearing. The decision shall be the final decision of the Board as to all matters of this grievance.

In matters where the student believes that the Mechanical Trades Institute Joint Apprenticeship and Training Trust and Board of Trustees has violated its enrollment agreement or other administrative issues, students may register a final appeal with the organizations listed above.
