Welding Program

The JATT Welding program is part of our 5-year work study program and continuing education for local Journeymen. The JATT teaches pipe welding and all its processes, with full time instructors available during the day and some evenings. Pipe welding is one of the highest skill sets in welding. Once apprentices have learned these processes your knowledge will be applicable to other areas of the welding industry. By the end of the JATT program apprentices will be a multi process skilled welder.

Hours of Operation

While school is in session hours are 7AM to 8:30PM for all students and members of Local Union 72 Monday through Thursday.

During the summer months the welding school is open from 7AM to 5PM Monday through Thursday.

Courses

Approximately 75% of class time will be spent in the shop learning directly from our certified welding instructors.

201: Intro to shielded metal arch welding, welding symbol interpretation, basic welding theory, and other foundations.
402: Introduces pipe welding, earning UA certifications, and introduction to Gas Tungsten Arc Welding.
503: Focuses on gaining certifications and introducing students to to GMAW and other specialized welding processes.

Applicants can show document prior training in welding from a trade school or technical school and work experience may be able to receive course credit for the 101 course. Applicants may also be required to demonstrate their skill ability at a weld test evaluation.

Advanced Weld Testing

The JATT holds bimonthly weld testing session to allow Local 72 members the opportunity to certify in 78 different welding processes. Obtaining additional and specific weld certifications increases the value and demand for these welders. Contractors do request welders with specific welding certifications.

Continuity Forms

Once a welding certification is achieved, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers rules requires welders to maintain continuity of their skills. Continuity forms allow welders to show that they have been utilizing their skills in the last six months. The required form lists the company the welder has been working for and the welding processes that has been performed within that time period

Failure to complete a continuity form for a specific certification within the six months requires welders to take a re-certification test at the apprenticeship school. The re-certification test is free for all members of Local Union 72.

UA Weld Re-Certification

Download the UA Weld Continuity form. The company foreman should complete the form and mail or fax it to JATT main campus office. The date on the continuity form should not exceed the expiration date on the welder’s UA Weld card. Continuity forms must be turned in every six months or less to prevent loss of your certifications.

HVACR Program

UA Local 72 has Service Technicians qualified to service any size or type of HVACR system. Our technicians are highly trained to not only repair systems, but to recognize potential failures or maintenance issues before they become a major problem.

The systems we service everyday ranging from central energy plants, large buildings, factories with chillers that produce thousands of tons of cooling, specialized computer rooms, cascade type low temperature systems used in cryogenic facilities or the latest DDC energy management control systems are critical for our clients to better serve their customers.

Local 72 Technicians have had thousands of hours of classroom, on the job and continuing education training. We have the latest and most advanced safety techniques available including OSHA, Arc Flash, Rigging and environmental training related to the handling and use of all types of refrigerants, lubricants and chemicals used in the HVACR industry.

UA Local Union 72 welders and pipefitters have played a significant role in the Industrial History of the State of Georgia.

For well over a century the well trained Pipefitters, Welders and Apprentices of Local Union 72 have demonstrated their ability to deliver quality work and craftsmanship in the Industrial piping arena.

The Industrial landscape of Local Union 72's jurisdiction covers a wide range of work scope, from large electricity producing power plants, to paper mills, breweries, food and beverage manufacturers, pharmaceutical plants and research and development laboratories.

Local Union 72 members have been involved in the construction of numerous Southern Company/Georgia Power projects. With one of the largest being Plant Scherer in Juliette, GA. Plant Scherer is one of the largest steam plants in the world with an annual output of over three million kilowatts of electricity. The latest project is Plant McDonough-Atkinson in Smyrna, GA. McDonough-Atkinson is a three unit gas fired combined-cycle generating plant that can produce a combined total 2,500 megawatts of electricity making it one of Southern Companies largest producers. In the Power Industry UA members routinely use their skills in rigging, pipe and support welding and lay-out to fabricate and install piping, pumps, valves, instrumentation and other assorted equipment weighing up to hundreds of tons.

UA Local Union 72 members are actively engaged year round in the maintenance of numerous Georgia Power plants, working under a Powerhouse Maintenance Agreement. This agreement is crafted to take advantage of the skills of Local 72 members to enable GA Power to ensure its customers an ample supply of affordable electricity.

The food and beverage along with the pharmaceutical industry require a somewhat different set of skills. Both of these are covered by strict government guide lines for cleanliness, attention to detail and accurate record keeping. Along with standard industrial training, Local 72 offers a number of specialized classes to provide its members with the hard and soft skills needed for these ever changing areas.

UA Local 72 believes and takes pride in training its membership not only for today but also for the future. In this training, great emphasis is placed on craftsmanship, quality, safety, dependability and leadership. This type of training is one of the reasons many Local Union 72 members are found in leadership, quality control, planning and installation positions with companies from coast-to-coast and around the world.

Plumbing Program

UA local 72 plumbers are trained using an extensive and comprehensive five year apprenticeship program . After completing our Apprenticeship Training Program UA 72 plumbers have 8,000 “On the Jobsite Training (OJT) hours and 1,200 classroom hours. They also have a state of Georgia journeyman license, back flow certification ,OSHA 30 hour safety training, and medical gas installer and brazing certification.

Our members can work on a 50 story office buildings, like the Georgia Aquarium, or service In-home emergency plumbing calls. UA local 72 plumbers are ready to take care of all your plumbing needs.

Skills needed to be a UA local 72 plumber include: Read and interpret designer drawings. Having a full grasp of specifications to determine layout of water supply, waste, and venting systems. Detect faults in plumbing appliance systems, and correctly diagnose their causes. Install, repair and maintain domestic, commercial, and industrial plumbing fixtures and systems. Locate marking positions for pipe connections, passage holes, fixtures in walls, floor measuring, cutting, bend threading pipes using hand and power tools or machines. Join pipe fitting together using soldering techniques, compression fittings, threaded fittings, and push-on fittings. Test pipes for leaks using air and water pressure gauges

UA local 72 also has multiple signatory contractors with fully comprehensive plumbing service departments . Our service plumbers maintain plumbing systems in all areas: industrial, commercial , or residential. A UA 72 service plumber is trained to diagnose all problems you may be experiencing no matter the size, time, or how quickly the customer needs repair.
